The Black Ceiling: A Journey of Relational Recovery

The Black Ceiling: A Christian Guide to Overcoming Spousal Abuse and the Condemnation of Divorce, is a book that can help anyone who has ever been emotionally or relationally wounded in their life.

It sounds like a heavy book for a heavy topic, but it is the most encouraging book I have written so far! It is of course not written to condone divorce in the church. (I have developed premarital curriculums, as well). But this book is designed to help those 50% who have experienced a divorce or maltreatment within immediate or extended family to fully recover from it.

In this book, we will explore the Bible together and find out what passages such as this mean:

Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has given up and left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for My sake and for the Gospel’s
Who will not receive a hundred times as much now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
But many [who are now] first will be last [then], and many [who are now] last will be first [then].
Mark 10:29-31, AMPC

Contrary to common belief, the Bible is not silent on the topic of divorce or abuse.

In fact, it is our only true guide for healing.

While God hates divorce (this is very true), He loves the mantle—which is you! This is just as true! (See Malachi 2.)

The Black Ceiling will lead readers through the Scriptures in order to be obedient to them. This is where our strength and recovery lies. This book will reestablish your relationship with God much faster than suffering in silence can.

Before I wrote this book, I interviewed many people who were Christians who had gone through a divorce. I found that most of them have never understood why it happened, and still had bitterness in their hearts.

There are few things that are more difficult to endure than abuse from the people we are doing our best to love. These are the highest of the biblical tests, but I am here to tell you you can recover—fully, and you can discover what God meant by your rescue. It may not initially feel like a rescue—it can feel devastating, but time will reveal God’s good heart toward you. Salvation isn’t always clear to us at first, but God will find and claim His leaders.

Consider this excerpt from page 185:

Only in Heaven, will we clearly see all the reasons why things happen as they do on earth. Right now, we have faith that our lives matter to God. We find this faith by looking in the Bible…

King David was a rising star. He also faced many issues with people. If he had not, he wouldn’t have stood out! We follow his biblical career from when he was a shepherd boy, overlooked as choice for king—but God’s will overruled (1 Sam 16:10). We see him fight in unconventional ways, because the way others told him to do it, did not fit him (1 Sam 17:38-39). We see David painstakingly let go of the Saul’s in his life for the sake of souls, as God inevitably used his hard won independence to forge a mighty leader (1 Sam 17:36-37; 2 Sam 7:8-9). We see David’s mistakes, and how God beautifully rectified them all (2 Sam 11; Matt 1:1). Often we do not see that David had anyone to lean on other than God (Ps 27:10). Like stars distanced from each other in a night sky, he had to find his inner resolve. In the midst of nearly every psalm, there was a silent but pivotal moment in his thinking where he rejected being controlled by circumstance and, instead, yielded to the inner conviction regarding his divine purpose (Ps 27:13-14). He consistently turned from man, and his own feelings regarding them, to follow God. David stood on God’s promises; he talked to God; and he solely relied on his personal connection to God for natural survival. Time and again, he reverenced God as the One True King, elevating Him above all people, including himself. To this day, David remains a biblical hero—a specially placed star, and a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22). God still uses the light He placed inside David’s soul centuries ago as a guide for those navigating the earth today.

A major part of the enemy’s tactic is spiritual deviation. To get us addicted to an endless cycle of “problem-solving”, he only needs to throw us an issue, and just when that one is nearly solved, another…until we have no time, or desire, to enjoy God. In reality, we are not striving with our problems, we are striving with God. Lay down distraction, and turn to face Him. Ask Him kindly and reverently about it, and leave it in His hands. When we rest in God, He takes care of our problems for us. Think of it this way—if we were expert problem solvers we wouldn’t have any! The fact is, we have not solved a single one of our problems—God has solved them all.

The enemy of our life, Satan, wants us to feel alone in our pain. But we are never alone. We have been fully redeemed by Christ, Who not only heals us from every worldly wound, but restores us to the life we were genuinely designed for.

This may be hard to hear right now, but God loves you. If He did not, He could have let you perish where you were. He saved you. And He will use you in ways that will amaze you.

Remember…

Many [who are now] first will be last [then], and many [who are now] last will be first [then].

The Black Ceiling will help you transition from rejection to authority in the Body of Christ. Through this book, it is my sincere prayer that the Lord Himself will connect with you and teach you how to separate from all forms of sin and come into a new, holy life in unity with Christ Jesus.

As believers, we were designed to heal ~ this means we are to be fully saved and fully recovered.
